Wrist Injury

 

 

Fractures (radius and ulna or carpal bones and dislocations)

Often caused by a fall onto the outstretched hand or a strong twisting/turning movement.

Treatment

  • If you suspect a fracture or a dislocation support the arm in a comfortable position and seek medical help immediately.

Sprains

Can be caused by a fall onto an outstretched hand or by a sudden or repeated twisting/turning movement.

Treatment

  • Stop playing the sport that caused the injury to rest the wrist.

  • Use an ice pack at regular intervals.

  • Elevate and support the wrist, this will help to reduce swelling.

  • If symptoms don't improve after 48 hours, talk to your GP or a qualified physio.

Tendonitis

Often caused by repeated movements causing inflammation of one or more of the tendons at the wrist, thumb or fingers.

Treatment

  • Stop the activity you think is causing the problem to rest the sprain.

  • Apply an ice pack at regular intervals.
