Shin pain (shin splints)
Usually caused by excessive running or walking, leading to pain and inflammation of the muscles and tendons at the front of the lower leg.
Treatment
Rest your leg and reduce running/walking to a minimum.
Use an ice pack after exercise to reduce inflammation.
If symptoms persist, talk to your GP or a qualified physio.
Calf muscle strain
Usually caused by a sudden, unexpected movement that overloads or over-stretches the calf muscles.
Treatment
Rest your leg and try to move it as little as possible.
Apply an ice pack at intervals.
Elevate and support the leg, this will help to reduce swelling.
If symptoms persist after 24-48 hours, consult your GP or a qualified physio.
